چکیده
Analysis of human mutation rates and the number of genes required for human intellectual and emotional fitness indicates that we are almost certainly losing these abilities. If so, how did we get them in the first place, and when did things begin to change?

Our fragile intellect. Part I.
New developments in genetics, anthropology, and neurobiology predict that a very large number of genes underlie our intellectual and emotional abilities, making these abilities genetically surprisingly fragile.

I would be willing to wager that if an average citizen from Athens of 1000 BC were to appear suddenly among us, he or she would be among the brightest and most intellectually alive of our colleagues and companions. We would be surprised by our time-visitor’s memory, broad range of ideas and clear-sighted view of important issues. I would also guess that he or she would be among the most emotion...

Fragile X syndrome, second only to Down syndrome among etiologies of mental retardation, was discussed. Clinical, intellectual, and anthropometric characteristics from 67 fragile X positive males, 35 fragile X positive females, and 27 obligate carriers among 29 families was presented. Regression analysis showed little correlation between level of intellect and frequency of fragile sites. The me...

متن کاملBryostatin-1 restores hippocampal synapses and spatial learning and memory in adult fragile x mice.
Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is caused by transcriptional silencing in neurons of the FMR1 gene product, fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP), a repressor of dendritic mRNA translation. The lack of FMRP leads to dysregulation of synaptically driven protein synthesis and impairments of intellect, cognition, and behavior, a disorder that currently has no effective therapeutics. Fragile X mice ...
